What is your familiar?

Your familiar is the AI assistant built into ScryRPG. Ask it questions about your campaign or ask it to make a change. It follows your account and party permissions. For example, it can work with your characters and items when you have access; it cannot use a request to grant you permissions you do not have.

Where to find your familiar

Use the familiar widget from the app shell for a quick private request, or open Familiar in the sidebar for your private page (if you’ve named your familiar, the item shows its name). The private page has Chat, Activity, and Memory tabs. On a party home, use the Ask your familiar box or open the party’s Familiar page from its navigation. Use the Discord Bot Guide for Discord setup and commands.

The widget opens your private conversation and is hidden on the Assistant page. Its Open familiar page button takes you to /assistant.

Personal vs Party Conversations

Your private page and the party page have different audiences.

Private conversations are visible only to you, including when you choose a party as the campaign context. In New conversation, choose one of your campaigns or Personal, no campaign. Your familiar can use the selected campaign context, but other party members do not see your private conversation.

The party conversation is shared with party members. Messages and streamed replies appear in the party’s standing room. The page shows who is at the table, who is typing, and session start or end events. The At the table list can show members as away when presence is available. The From Discord list lets you open Familiar conversations continued in Discord threads.

The party home Ask your familiar box and its quick prompts open the party Familiar page with your request ready to send. Party chat makes it clear that everyone in the party sees what you ask.

Conversation Management

On /assistant, select Chat, Activity, or Memory. In Chat, use New conversation to choose a campaign or start a personal conversation without campaign context. Use Search conversations to find one. Open a conversation’s actions menu to Rename it or Archive it. Archiving removes it from your list and keeps its history. Older legacy conversations are read-only.

The Activity tab lists changes made by the familiar, with receipts and available undo controls. It is not a complete log of questions or read-only answers. The Memory tab lets you review what the familiar remembers. In party chat, a response identifies who asked for a change.

What your familiar can do

The familiar can answer questions and make changes that your account and party role allow. Ask in plain language, then review and confirm changes when prompted.

For Players

  • Your character: Read character details and update your character’s supported stats or notes. You can also create and manage your own characters.
  • Your inventory: Search item templates, add items to a container, and move items between containers. In private conversations, you can ask it to generate a custom item. You can also create items and set quantities by hand in the app.
  • Campaign information: Search party lore and notes, and ask about party inventory and activity you can access.

For Game Masters

GMs can use the player features above, plus party actions their role permits:

  • Party inventory: Add items or currency to party containers and characters.
  • Shops and loot: Create or update shop and loot templates, ask it to curate their contents, then deploy or manage party shops and loot, including visibility and claiming settings. Hidden contents remain hidden until revealed.
  • Party and lore: Manage party settings and members, and create or update party lore. GM-only lore notes stay limited to GMs and managers.
  • Imports: Start an import from the importer, or use the familiar handoff for a large paste. Imports show an estimate and review before changes are applied. See the Import Guide.

Pasting Session Notes

Paste a sufficiently long session recap into a party conversation. When the familiar recognizes it as source material, it offers an import handoff. Choose Start import when that button is available to open the party importer and run its estimate; otherwise choose Open importer. Review the estimate and proposed changes before confirming. The recap importer proposes party-visible lore and session changes. See Sessions And Recaps for the session record and review flow.

Choosing how your familiar helps

Free rein is on by default. With it on, ordinary requested changes can happen without a separate approval. Your familiar still asks first before deleting or revealing information, changing permissions or party membership, changing another player’s character or inventory, using another person’s monthly usage, or making a large change. A failed change rolls back entirely. If the familiar pauses or stops before finishing a request, its status shows what was completed and what remains when that information is available. Use Continue to resume an unfinished request or Leave it to dismiss it.

To turn off free rein, open Settings and switch off Give your familiar free rein. You can also turn on Check with me first in a private conversation to approve ordinary changes in that conversation. Sensitive changes still need confirmation either way.

Usage Limits

Every plan includes a monthly AI usage allowance, and your familiar, imports, and AI tools share it. The free plan covers about 20 times as much as it did before monthly usage replaced the old system, and each paid plan is a multiple of the free plan. The allowance resets monthly on every plan, including annual plans. Imports count toward the same allowance, and a large import shows an estimate before you proceed.

Open Settings, then the Familiar section, to see the percentage used and reset date. The app gives heads-ups at 50%, 75%, and 90%. When usage runs out, AI features pause until the next reset; manual tools keep working. For current plans, see the Subscription Guide.

Every plan includes monthly AI usage for your familiar, imports and art. Paid plans include more, and it resets each month.

Example Prompts

Try a request that matches your role and what you can access.

Player Prompts

I just took 12 damage. Update my character's HP.
Move my healing potion to my backpack.
What do we know about the Ashen Chancellor in our party lore?

Game Master Prompts

Add 50 gold to each party member's inventory.
Hide the party's loot pile until I reveal it.

If your request needs approval, respond to the prompt on screen. If you reach your monthly usage limit, the familiar pauses AI work until usage resets. See the Import Guide for importing content.

Privacy & Data Scope

The familiar’s tools follow your account and party permissions. In a private conversation, it can work with the campaign you selected and content you can access. In a party conversation, it uses that party’s shared context. It cannot use a request to access a party you do not belong to or another player’s private character or inventory. GM-only lore notes are available only to GMs and managers; hidden shop and loot contents stay hidden until revealed.

Private conversations are visible only to you. Party conversations are visible to members of that party. The familiar’s Activity tab shows changes with receipts; it is not a record of every question or read-only answer.

Common Questions

Can I undo something my familiar changed? Open the receipt in the conversation or the Activity tab and choose Undo when that action can be reversed. Some changes may need confirmation to undo. A failed change rolls back entirely; undo is for a successful change you want to reverse.

What if a request stops before it is finished? The request card shows completed work and remaining work when available. Choose Continue to resume when it is offered, or Leave it to dismiss the unfinished request. If the monthly usage limit stopped it, wait for the reset or compare plans.

Can the familiar make a player or GM do something their role does not allow? No. The familiar follows the permissions attached to your account and party role. Players and GMs can also create items and set quantities by hand in the app.

Can my GM see my private conversations? No. The private page says that only you see those conversations. The party page is shared with members of that party.
