Foundry VTT closed beta
Set up Foundry for an invited ScryRPG closed-beta party, pair it with a one-time code, and review what campaign data it reads.
Last updated: October 25, 2026
Access
The module adds a ScryRPG campaign panel and character sheets inside Foundry. For a party with access enabled by the beta team, the read surface includes live campaign data from ScryRPG: characters, inventory, shops, loot, lore and notes, subject to each member’s access. Pairing is not generally available. Changes made in Foundry update ScryRPG only for parties the beta team has enabled for it, so plan to make campaign changes in ScryRPG.
Back up your world first
This is a closed beta. It can damage a Foundry world. Back up before installation, before updates and before each session. Try it on a copy of your world first.
In Foundry 13, leave your world with Game Settings > Return to Setup. Right-click the world and choose Take Backup. Wait for it to finish. Alternatively, stop Foundry completely and copy the whole world folder from Data/worlds somewhere safe. For hosted worlds, use your host’s backup or export feature and check its restore instructions.
To restore a Foundry backup, return to Setup, open the world’s menu, choose Manage Backups, select the backup from before installation and choose Restore. This replaces the world’s current state; later play in that world is lost. To restore a folder copy, stop Foundry, move the current folder aside and put the saved folder back under Data/worlds.
A world backup restores Foundry, not changes made on the ScryRPG website. Leave the module disabled after restoring while the team helps you check what happened. History undo is for individual changes; a backup is the only complete undo for the world.
Requirements
- Foundry 13 with D&D 5e 5.3.0 through 5.3.x, or Foundry 14 with D&D 5e 5.3.x or 6.0.0 through 6.0.x. Other D&D 5e versions and other systems are outside this beta.
- Open Foundry over HTTPS or on localhost. A plain HTTP address on your home network will not support sign-in.
- The ScryRPG server address must use HTTPS.
- Everyone needs a ScryRPG account and membership in the same party. The party GM or a manager must be included in the Foundry beta to pair it. Each player who needs a personal connection must be eligible for the beta member code. Access is by invitation, with no paid-plan requirement.
Two-browser testing used Foundry 13.351 with D&D 5e 5.3.3 and Foundry 14.368 with D&D 5e 6.0.5, in Chromium 152. Foundry 14.368 with D&D 5e 5.3.3 passed separate panel and sheet checks. Other versions and browsers are not yet verified. The menu instructions here use Foundry 13.
Install and enable
After your party is invited:
-
On Foundry’s Setup screen, open Add-on Modules, then Install Module.
-
Paste this address into Manifest URL and click Install:
https://github.com/bmikk/scryrpg-foundry-releases/releases/latest/download/module.json -
Launch the world as GM. Open Game Settings > Manage Modules, enable ScryRPG Connected Campaign (Alpha), then choose Save Module Settings and reload.
-
A new world points at ScryRPG by default. Leave the server address alone unless the team asks you to change it. An older world keeps its saved address.
The module is installed by manifest URL, not by searching the package browser. As an alternative, unpack the release zip into Data/modules/scryrpg-foundry so it contains module.json, then restart Foundry or return to Setup.
Back up before updating. Use Update or Update All in Add-on Modules. If the panel asks for a newer module version, sync stops until you update. Keep changes made in Foundry safe before updating and check with the beta team if you are unsure whether they will reach ScryRPG.
Connect once per person
- A party GM or manager opens Party Settings and finds Foundry VTT. This section appears only when the server says the party can pair in the closed beta.
- Under Pair your world, choose Generate pairing code. Copy the one-time Install code while it is shown. It expires after 15 minutes, can be used once, and replaces any outstanding code for the same person.
- Use the pairing code in the Foundry module to connect the world to the party. The pairing flow and exact module prompts can differ by module version; follow the prompts shown in your invited beta build.
- For each player who needs a personal connection, the GM or manager selects that eligible member under Player connect codes, chooses Generate code for [member], then shares the code privately. The player enters it in their own Foundry client. A member’s newest code replaces the previous one.
- Open Status, the bell at the top of the panel, and use its Setup section to finish linking characters.
The GM or manager must be in the beta cohort, and the server must also allow the selected member. Accepted party members may be eligible through the party’s beta grant, unless individually excluded. Pairing controls are hidden when the server does not allow pairing. Keep sign-in and install codes private. On shared computers, sign out from Account when finished.
Link your characters
For a character that exists only in Foundry, use Create in ScryRPG under Status > Setup. A player doing this for their own character owns it on both sides. If the GM creates it, it belongs to the GM on ScryRPG until offered to the player through Players and characters and accepted by that player.
For a character that exists on ScryRPG, select its partner under Your Foundry character, choose Compare with ScryRPG, then Link it, keeping Foundry’s values to bring the Foundry build across. Use the existing character rather than making another copy.
For a character that exists only on ScryRPG, choose Keep the campaign side with the GM connected. If the full build is unavailable, create an empty Foundry character with the same name and link it using Link it, keeping ScryRPG’s values.
If asked to match items, match each ScryRPG item to its Foundry counterpart or choose Not in Foundry. Review removals and new items, then choose Start character setup. Follow remaining prompts and resolve conflicts. Setup is finished when the panel says Foundry and ScryRPG agree; setup is complete.
What works in the beta
- Inventory: the module reads character containers and the Party Stash, subject to the member’s access.
- Coins: coin values are included with the live campaign data.
- Shops: the module reads party shops and their visible stock.
- Loot: the module reads loot piles, with visibility controlled by the party’s reveal state.
- Lore and notes: the module reads party lore and notes according to their audience and the member’s permissions.
- Character setup: the module supports linking characters to the campaign; follow the prompts for your version and review the changes before confirming.
- Character sheets: linked character information appears in Foundry; the exact sheet features depend on the supported Foundry and D&D 5e versions above.
Use Open on ScryRPG where it appears to view the related campaign page.
Recommended session routine
Create shops and loot in ScryRPG, then read them in Foundry. Avoid editing the same character on both sides at once. Connect each player and link characters before game night.
Level up between sessions using either the sheet’s level-up button or a D&D Beyond re-import, not both for the same level. A website level-up appears as waiting in Foundry. A D&D Beyond re-import updates the build while preserving play values such as coins, items, current HP and spent spell slots. Conditions reset to D&D Beyond’s conditions, usually none; reapply active conditions afterward. Disable D&D Beyond Importer options that send changes back to D&D Beyond for linked characters during this beta.
Known limits
- Conditions are not part of the live ScryRPG read surface described here. Set them in Foundry for play.
- Experience points and spent uses or charges on items and features stay in Foundry.
- Carrying capacity reads Capacity not shown, or Not shown where unavailable. The Take dialog omits unavailable capacity. Loot piles show no total value.
- The module reads shops and loot. Need or Greed voting and management remain on ScryRPG; use Open on ScryRPG where it appears.
- The published beta guide does not verify map loot or encounters. Check with the beta team before relying on them.
Pause, restore or uninstall
If something looks wrong, pause sync instead of changing both sides by hand. As GM, open Game Settings > Configure Settings, turn on Pause ScryRPG sync and save. You can also use Account > Pause sync in the panel. This stops reading and applying updates; it does not undo earlier changes. Use Resume in Status when ready.
Report the problem in the closed-beta channel where you were invited. Include what happened and roughly when. Hide sign-in codes in any console screenshots.
To stop using the module, disable ScryRPG Connected Campaign (Alpha) under Manage Modules, save and reload. Removing the module leaves its notes, created items and some settings in the world. It does not restore earlier values. Restore your backup if you need the complete Foundry world back.
