Currency System
How gold, silver, and custom currencies work in ScryMarket, including the GP peg and shop transactions.

Overview
Currency in ScryMarket is not just a number on your character sheet. Currencies are actual item instances in your inventory that you spend and receive through shop transactions.
Currency as Items
Every piece of gold, silver, or platinum in ScryMarket exists as an item instance in one of your containers. When you buy something from a shop, the currency is removed from your inventory. When you sell, currency is added.
This means:
- Currency takes up space (though stacks are generous at 1000 per slot)
- You need currency in your inventory to buy things
- Party members can share currency through party containers
The Currency Tag
Any item can be marked as currency by adding the currency tag. This tells ScryMarket:
- Display it in currency summaries
- Make it available for shop transactions
- Include it in wealth calculations
Standard currencies (Gold Piece, Silver Piece, etc.) come pre-tagged. Custom currencies you create should also have this tag.
The Gold Piece Peg
All values in ScryMarket are pegged to the Gold Piece (GP), following D&D 5e and Pathfinder 2e conventions:
| Currency | Value in GP |
|---|---|
| Copper Piece (CP) | 0.01 GP |
| Silver Piece (SP) | 0.1 GP |
| Gold Piece (GP) | 1 GP |
| Platinum Piece (PP) | 10 GP |
When you set an item’s value at “50 GP”, shops know exactly how much to charge and pay regardless of which currency the player uses.
Shop Transactions
When buying or selling, shops handle currency automatically.
Buying from a Shop
- Select the item you want to purchase
- Choose which of your containers to pay from
- Shop calculates total cost (base value × sell modifier)
- Currency is deducted from your chosen container
- Item is added to your chosen container
Least-Efficient Currency First
Shops automatically prefer your least valuable currency when making purchases. If you buy something for 1 GP and have copper, silver, and gold, the shop uses 100 CP first, then SP, then GP. This helps you avoid accumulating low-value coins.
Selling to a Shop
- Select the item you want to sell
- Shop calculates payment (base value × buy modifier)
- Currency is added to your inventory from the shop’s till
- If the shop lacks exact change, it uses what currency it has
Making Change
Shops make change based on what currency they have in their till. A shop with only gold cannot give silver in change. GMs can stock shop tills with mixed currency for realistic transactions.
Multi-Currency Transactions
Shops can accept multiple currency types in a single transaction:
Example: Buying a 15 GP item
- You have: 10 GP, 50 SP
- Shop deducts: 50 SP (5 GP value) + 10 GP
- You receive: The item
The shop handles the math automatically, converting between currencies at their GP values.
Custom Currencies
You can create currencies for any setting:
Fantasy Examples:
- Electrum Pieces (0.5 GP)
- Trade Bars (50 GP)
- Dragon Scales (currency for a specific faction)
Sci-Fi Examples:
- Credits
- Energy Units
- Corporation Scrip
Creating Custom Currency
- Create an item template with your currency’s name
- Add the currency tag
- Set the value relative to GP (e.g., 1 Credit = 0.1 GP)
- Optionally set weight (coins typically weigh 0.02 lbs each)
Warning
Custom currencies still derive their value from the GP peg. If 1 Credit = 0.1 GP, a 50 GP sword costs 500 Credits.
Currency in Party Play
Party Treasury
Many groups keep shared gold in a party container. Party members can:
- View the treasury balance
- Contribute currency to the party container
- Take currency from the party container
Shop Purchases
Only individual characters can make shop purchases. To use party gold, first transfer currency from the party container to one of your character’s containers, then make the purchase.
FAQ
Do I need GP specifically, or can I use any currency? Any currency works. Shops convert automatically based on GP values.
What if a shop runs out of change? It pays with whatever currency it has. GMs can manually add mixed currency to shop tills.
Can I create currencies worth more than platinum? Yes! Trade bars, gems-as-currency, or any high-value item can be tagged as currency with appropriate GP value.
Does currency weight affect encumbrance? Yes, if your party tracks encumbrance. Standard coins weigh 0.02 lbs each (50 coins = 1 lb, per D&D rules).
Pathfinder 2e Coins
In PF2e parties using the Bulk encumbrance style, coins use the Bulk system instead of weight. Individual coins have negligible bulk, but 1,000 coins of any type equal 1 Bulk. ScryMarket calculates coin bulk automatically across all your containers.
Which container does the shop pull currency from? You choose which container to pay from when making a purchase. The shop then uses your least valuable currency first from that container.
